Kendo Ontario New Year Godo Keiko

Happy New Year and Best Wishes for 2018 !

This is a friendly reminder that Kendo Ontario’s New Year Godo Keiko will be held this Sat Jan 13, 2018 @ 1:00pm @ Nikka Gakuen Kendo dojo.

This is an excellent opportunity to start the year by sharing keiko with Senior Sensei and friends in the Kendo community.

Special Note:

This year, the event will be hosted by Nikka Gakuen Kendo Club!!

It’s a pleasure to see Nikka Gakuen Kendo Club grow and mature over the years and we are pleased that they have volunteered to host this year’s New Year Godo Keiko.

In addition to hosting Godo Keiko, the parents of the junior members of Nikka Gakuen will be serving light refreshments in the form of OZONI (traditional rice cake in soup) to participants.

Please join us for the first Godo Keiko of 2018!

Time:                  1:00 p.m. to approximately 2:30 p.m., followed by light refreshments (Ozoni – traditional rice cake in soup)

Kagami Biraki at Hamilton Kendo Club

The Hamilton Kendo Club is hosting a Kagami Biraki on Sunday, January 21, 2018.

Godo Keiko will be from 1:00 to 2:30 p.m., followed by the Kagami Biraki at 3:00 p.m.

There is no fee for this event but donations would be greatly appreciated to help cover costs. Please RSVP to [email protected] by January 17, 2017.

University of Toronto Kendo Invitational Tournament 2018

2018 Detroit Open Kendo Tournament Date Announced

From the Detroit Kendo Dojo Tournament Committee:

“We cordially invite you to join us once again for a weekend of competition, camaraderie, and kendo as we host the 20th Annual Detroit Open Kendo Tournament on Sunday, February 18, 2018.

Please also consider joining us on Saturday the 17th for a seminar led by Kendo Kyoshi 8 Dan Fumihiro Miyazaki Sensei of the Kanagawa Prefecture Police Department and the 1997 All Japan Kendo Champion and Emperor’s Cup Winner.

Team Canada Keiko @ JCCC Tonight

Apologies for the late notice but as announced at the JCCC Tournament, Team Canada Coach Dean Ara will be hosting a dedicated Team Canada practice tonight from 7-8pm at the JCCC.

This will be followed with an opportunity to share Keiko with Team Canada members from 8-8:45pm.

Everyone is invited to join us.

Special Practice with Chuo University Alumni

Hello Kendo Community,

We are pleased to announce that a practice for special guests from Japan and New York City will be held on Monday December 4, 2017.

Shinji Shimizu Sensei, Kendo 8th Dan of Kumamoto, Japan (member of Team Japan in 1991) and Yoichi Sawada Sensei, Kendo 8th Dan of Shirayuri Gakuen High School, Japan, accompanied by Masahiko Negita Sensei of New York City will be visiting JCCC Kendo club on Monday December 4, 2017.  Ms. Kazue Takatsuki, special Chuo University Kendo Communicator/Coordinator will also be traveling from Japan to join in the event.

All are Alumni of Chuo University Kendo and through their relationship with our own Chuo University Alumni Sensei in Toronto, they have decided to travel to Toronto for this special practice with us.

This is an excellent opportunity to share keiko with high level Sensei and we invite all members of the Kendo community to join us.

JCCC Senior Kendo Tournament

From all us at Kendo Ontario, good luck to all competitors at this weekend’s JCCC Senior Kendo Tournament!

Here are a few reminders and updates for you.

Friday, November 24th (tonight)

Pre-registration is available from 7:30 ~ 9:00 p.m.

The registration desk will be open to receive waivers and payment if they haven’t been mailed / emailed already.

Please note: the tournament package will not be handed out until Saturday, November 25th.

Shinai Weighing: 7:30 ~ 9:00 p.m.

Those who wish to weigh their shinai can do so Friday evening. The stamped shinai(s) will NOT be returned to you until the morning of the tournament. A maximum of 3 shinais can be weighed and stamped.

There is a free practice / keiko from 7:30 ~ 8:45 p.m. at the JCCC dojo. All are welcome to join.

Saturday, November 25th

JCCC will be open at 7:30 a.m.

Registration and Shinai Weighing will start at 7:30 a.m.

For those who are shinpan, there is a meeting at 8:00 a.m.

The opening ceremony will start at 8:30 a.m. and the tournament will start at 9:00 a.m.

4th Dan and Above Category

The 4th Dan and Above Individual Category will start at 9:00 a.m. 2 quadrants of the tree are scheduled to start at the beginning of the tournament while the remaining 2 quadrants are scheduled to start after lunch. This arrangement has been executed previously at other tournaments and enables a better availability of higher ranked shinpan throughout the day and to referee the 4th Dan and Above Category itself.

 

Kiwada Sensei – Toronto Schedule and Invitation

As previously posted, Daiki Kiwada Sensei (7 Dan, Renshi / 2012 All Japan Champion / 2009, 2012 World Champion Team Division) from Osaka Police will be visiting Canada from Sep 30th – Oct 11th.

Kiwada Sensei’s visit is made possible largely by the relationship between Chuo University and the University of Toronto.  He will be visiting Montreal / Toronto / Vancouver.

Kiwada Sensei’s Toronto Keiko Schedule (Oct 1-6) is as follows:

  1. Sunday, October 1:
    Location: JCCC
    Time: 10:00 a.m. ~ noonAs this will be the first keiko for Kiwada Sensei in Canada, we would like to take this opportunity to have Kiwada Sensei get an understanding of the level of Kendo in Canada. He will thus observe keiko in the beginning and then join motodachi-geiko. This practice is open to all who are able to attend.
  2. Wednesday, October 4:
    Location: Etobicoke Kendo & Iaido Club
    Time: 7:00 ~ 9:00 p.m.This practice will be shiai-geiko followed by motodachi-geiko and is open to all who are able to attend.
  3. Thursday, October 5:
    Location: University of Toronto Kendo Club
    Time: 9:00 ~ 10:30 p.m.Practice will be motodachi-geiko and is open to all who are able to attend.
  4. Friday, October 6:
    Location: JCCC
    Time: 7:00 ~ 8:00 p.m.This will be a motodachi-geiko practice open to all who are able to attend.Following this practice, there will be a further session from 8:00~10:00 p.m. for Team Canada members only.

We are very fortunate to have Kiwada Sensei visit Canada.  Please take advantage of this opportunity to practice with him during his stay.
